The Gimp เป็นโปรแกรมแต่งรูปฟรีสำหรับผู้ที่ต้องการหันมาใช้โปรแกรมฟรีแวร์ โปรแกรมนี้เป็นโปรแกรมฟรีแวร์ที่หลายคนยกให้ว่ามีความสามารถเทียบเคียง Photoshop เลยทีเดียว ลักษณะการทำงานของโปรแกรมเป็นไปตามหลักการทำงานของโปรแกรมแต่งรูปทั่วไป สามารถใช้ระบบเลเยอร์ ระบบ selection ปรับแสง สี ความเข้มได้อย่างอิสระ สามารถใส่เอฟเฟ็คต่างๆ ได้ ซึ่งหากใครเคยใช้โปรแกรมแต่งรูปแนวนี้มาก่อน ก็จะสามารถเข้าใจการทำงานของโปรแกรมได้ไม่ยาก แต่อาจจะแตกต่างในด้านของเมนูคำสั่งหรือช็อตคัทที่อาจจะต้องใช้เวลาศึกษาอยู่สักหน่อย สำหรับเวอร์ชั่นอัพเดทล่าสุดก็มีการแก้ไขบั๊กเป็นหลัก พร้อมทั้งแก้ไขปัญหาที่เกิดเมื่อมีการเซฟไฟล์บางประเภท เป็นต้น

GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a freely distributed piece of software suitable for such tasks as photo retouching image composition and image authoring. It can be used as a simple paint program an expert-quality photo-retouching program an online batch-processing system a mass production image renderer or an image-format converter. GIMP is modular expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image-manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.

- Fix language selection via preferences on Windows

- Keep the same image active when switching between MWM and SWM
- Make sure all dockables are properly resizable (particularly shrinkable)
- Add links to jump directly to Save/Export from the Export/Save file extension warning dialogs
- Fix GimpPickButton on OSX
- Properly document plug-in-autocrop-layers PDB interface
- Fix importing of indexed BMPs
- Fix lots of places to use GIO to get proper file sizes and times on windows
- Add an AppData file for GIMP
- Backport lcms2 support from master because lcms1 is not getting bug fixes any longer
- Lots of bug fixes
- Lots of translation updates
