Thunderbird เรียกได้ว่ามากันเป็นแพ็คเกจคู่กันเลยทีเดียวกับ Firefox 8.0 จากค่าย Mozilla โปรแกรมนี้เป็นโปรแกรมที่เรียกกันว่า Mail Client ซึ่งเป็นโปรแกรมสำหรับใช้เชื่อมต่อกับ Mail Server ที่จะทำให้เราสามารถเช็คอีเมล์ได้จากเครื่องเราโดยตรง โปรแกรมสามารถใช้งานร่วมกับผู้ให้บริการอีเมล์ทั่วไปที่มีการเปิดให้ใช้งาน SMTP POP3/IMAP ซึ่งก็รวมทั้ง Hotmail Yahoo GMail Google App หรือผู้ให้บริการโฮสติ้งทั่วไปด้วย ในการอัพเดทครั้งนี้ก็มีการพัฒนาไปจากเวอร์ชั่นก่อนเยอะเลย เช่น การใช้ Gecko 8 engine ซึ่งเป็นตัวเดียวกับที่ใช้ใน Firefox 8.0 มีการเพิ่ม Lightning 1.0 ซึ่งจะทำให้เราสามารถใช้งานปฏิทินบน Thunderbird ได้แล้ว พร้อมทั้งการปรับปรุงในด้านความเสถียรและความปลอดภัยในบางจุด
